Microbiome Shorts: IBD and The Microbiome
Microbiome Shorts: IBD and The Microbiome
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis are complex disorders that involve multiple triggering and mediating mechanisms. Microbes can both be protective or triggering players in the development and ongoing outcome of IBD. What research is showing is quite distinct patterns of microbial growth and host responses in these conditions, which we discuss in these particular presentations in microbial testing. We will also consider different microbiome related interventions with these patterns in mind.
Objectives
- Overview of IBD and triggers
- Pathophysiology of IBD
- Host marker disturbances in IBD – calprotectin, FIT, HBD2
- Microbial patterns associated with IBD – butyrate species, mucosal degradation species, sulfidogenic bacteria, fusobacterium, and other specific species.
- Lifestyle, dietary and supplemental interventions to help modulate the microbiota
